The art in this episode was gorgeous

Naruto begins his training with a lot of standing and talking, but it concludes with our still rather dense student (nothing changes, eh?) discovering that his natural element is ‘wind’. In his own words, ‘Damn, I am so awesome!’

This was a really bright episode and honestly felt like how Naruto used to do things, what with Kakashi’s world-weary sense of humour and Naruto’s clumsy eagerness to learn everything as fast as possible. The animation was of a much higher standard than usual, too. As this was all happening in a large, wind-swept field, with lush green grass and falling tree leaves, the deep, natural vibrancy of the surrounding landscape was gorgeous. One particular scene, with Yamato using his talents to rip up the ground below and create an impromptu waterfall, replete with bushy trees, was a wonderful visual spectacle, and a creative use of his ninjitsu, too!

Jekyll and Sakura

This was a calm-after-the-storm episode that meandered through the old haunts (with old friends) of Konoha without any real sense of urgency. It may read as boring, but actually, it was fine. There is definitely something to be said for these more character-driven, quiet episodes; the little moments that have Naruto and Sakura at a loose end, doing nothing. It’s just a chance to see them from a different angle, not under the hammer of impending doom, but rather, as normal teenagers, to see them kicking around restaurants and arguing about stupid things.

Notably though, Naruto seems subdued. If one can remember how he always used to act, so loud and attention seeking, constantly cracking jokes and smiling, he just seems different now, so much more contemplative, as if lost in thought, his life seeming different to how it was always supposed to go.

orz

Naruto and Sakura collapse into a tearful despair after failing yet again to convince Sasuke to return to Konoha, but not a minute later, staring straight into the desolate expanse ahead, the teary-eyed new Team Kakashi resolve yet again to keep going, and in Sai, they have found a fine new friend, too. Tomorrow is another day.

Failure isn’t something that your typical shonen anime is likely to consider, but in Naruto, there is never any guarentee that goodness prevails over evil. Naruto has always been an insecure, lonely and desperate boy, neither a peerless warrior nor a sage philosopher, he just refuses to lose faith in his friends. Sakura is the same, too. Neither is perfect, but their honest, heartfelt desire to risk everything for their dearest friends, hopes and dreams is never less than inspiring. Heroism isn’t about being superhuman, heroes can die.

The Kyuubi

The inevitable finally happens.

I’m fascinated by Naruto’s dialogue with the Kyuubi, his alien, enigmatic beast lurking within, but this time, we catch glimpse of so much more. The demon manifests itself outside of its cage, right in-front of Naruto. It’s a huge monster, with a deep, booming voice and sharp fangs. Only then, through some unforeseen Uchiha technique, Sasuke joins them. This whole scene was spellbinding, beautifully animated, and serves as an evocative reminder as to why I’ve never lost hope in this series.

So, their reunion was worth the wait. Despite knowing that he is totally outclassed by Sasuke, Naruto refuses to step-back from his old friend. Simply saying, “Someone who can’t even save one friend isn’t fit to become Hokage.” In that moment, he was prepared to die. Naruto can be so cool.

Sai's picture book

We’re finally nearing that moment. That is, the reunion of Sasuke, Naruto and Sakura. This whole mission (and indeed, this whole series up until now) depends on their meeting, but it’s strange. Two years previous, Sasuke left them all behind. Consider all that time since then. He blatantly doesn’t want to return, but his old friends refuse to accept it. Their meeting will be tragic, no doubt, but I wonder, how will they react to being rejected by Sasuke yet again?

Once all is said and done, for perhaps the first time in Naruto Shippuden, we’ll finally be touching on new territory. This entire series has been building up to the next episode, but what comes after that is just as exciting.

I mean, we’ve been chasing after Sasuke for too long. Remember the cut-throat story arc of Zabuza? The fall of Konoha?
