The Children of the Sea

I don’t read nearly as much manga as I should and every time I come across this beautiful cover-art from Children of the Sea (by Daisuke Igarashi), most recently on the Anime News Network, I get the strong urge to just drop everything else right there and then and to start reading this instead. It’s difficult to pin down exactly what it is about this particular image that catches my eyes, I think the colours are beautiful, but colours alone are rarely enough. It could be to do with the subtlety of the facial expressions and those strange, staring eyes, and then I notice fish and the sparkling blue sea, too. Now it’s more like a sense of wonder. It’s so bright and full of life. I have so many questions.

The Kyuubi

The inevitable finally happens.

I’m fascinated by Naruto’s dialogue with the Kyuubi, his alien, enigmatic beast lurking within, but this time, we catch glimpse of so much more. The demon manifests itself outside of its cage, right in-front of Naruto. It’s a huge monster, with a deep, booming voice and sharp fangs. Only then, through some unforeseen Uchiha technique, Sasuke joins them. This whole scene was spellbinding, beautifully animated, and serves as an evocative reminder as to why I’ve never lost hope in this series.

So, their reunion was worth the wait. Despite knowing that he is totally outclassed by Sasuke, Naruto refuses to step-back from his old friend. Simply saying, “Someone who can’t even save one friend isn’t fit to become Hokage.” In that moment, he was prepared to die. Naruto can be so cool.
