Table manners?

This was a funny, pointless episode. Nearly half of it was spent debating the worthiness of tsukemen, as opposed to plain old, run of the mill ramen; you see, the former has its noodles served seperately from its accompanying soup, while the latter is everything in one big bowl; a key difference! Both sides have their virtues and Naruto is adamant that his beloved ramen is better, but the chefs have already taken it off their menu and refuse to serve anything but tsukemen (Naruto’s loud complaints that the ‘customer is always right’ falls on deaf ears, or rather, is met with the sound logic that, sometimes, the customer doesn’t know what’s good for him). In a fine end to an already fun scene, Kakashi sweet-talks dear Yamato into footing the bill!

The moon is pretty

With Sasuke hell-bent on revenge and Naruto training day and night to stop him, it’s as if Sakura’s been left behind again, fated always to play the dutiful, weak friend. Her very presence in Naruto used to be controversial, with many critics often seeing her as the token girl character; frail, dotting, and most damningly, useless, but that isn’t the Sakura we know now.

Since her rumble with Sasori, the bloody fight-to-the-death that she won with sheer guts and determination alone, it’s clear that she’s past being the shrieking violet of previous years, but she’s definitely angsting over something, too. It’s not because she’s weak, or whatever other slight people may throw against her character, no, she’s crying because her friends are fast heading towards a future beyond her control; her part in their lives seeming insignificant, cursed by fate.

Hidan's weird techniques

As if we didn’t know it already, apparently Akatsuki are strong. Really, really, really strong. And violent too. They don’t as much fight with their opposition, as play with them, but because they are such an enigmatic group, often operating from the murkiest of caverns and darkest of mountains, their random little sojourns into the countryside are quite funny; just listening to the way they trade banter amongst themselves, cursing and insulting and cracking jokes, and surviving from day to day as bounty-hunters, it humanizes that nasty reputation; to think that such a larger-than-life, evil organisation needs an accountant! Apparently, even Akatsuki have to pay the bills!

Well, it’s fun to watch them fight random people, too. They are all so undeniably cool, eccentric and weird looking, so to see them beat the crap out of some helpless drone, without feeling any moral compunction to root against them, is a deliciously evil sight to behold.

Flashback Asuma

A big part of the Naruto experience is in watching the characters change over time; Genin become Chunin,  Chunin become Jonin. It’s a story that echoes that very essence of life, that of growing up and becoming the person you’re destined to be. In this episode, that is the kind-of quiet, cathartic feeling one gets from Asuma. His short chat with Kakashi feels particularly evocative because he is talking like someone who has finally realised what it is that he wants out of life, or in other words, what it means to “protect the King”. He’s in love with Kurenai and seems to be on the verge of confessing, many of his old friends, like Kakashi, are still around, while his dearest students are fast growing up, themselves soon ready to take on pupils of their own. These are the threads Asuma’s life has sewn.

And don't we know it, Naruto?

It’s time again to sample that which shonen anime fans have grown to fear, the dreaded filler arc! Right at the end of this episode, half-way through his training, Naruto and team are suddenly assigned to another random Tsunade-mandated mission.

Sound familiar?

Oh god, here we go again!

At least the Dragonball Z filler episodes used some ridiculous ideas, like Piccolo trying to earn his driver’s license, but these Naruto efforts commit the grossest sin of all, that of aspiring to absolutely nothing.

So, it’s clear that this will drain the enthusiasm of any person brave enough to bother watching, but the thing is, it shouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility to come up with a fun, interesting original story, either. The world of Naruto is so rich with imagination and possibility, and to see it abused so cynically is tantamount to rape (only kidding, but you get the idea)! What a waste.
